Belgium is an interesting little country located in the North Central part of Europe. It borders the North Sea in the NorthWest, the Netherlands in the North/NorthEast, Germany to the East, Luxemburg in the SouthEast and France in the SouthWest and West.

Major Cities

Brussels

Brussels is the capital of Belgium and is also the home of the European Union.

Antwerp

Antwerp is Belgium's second largest city and it is concidered the diamond capital of the world.

Bruges

Bruges is a beautiful city located in the Flemish region (North) of Belgium. It's a canal based city and is sometimes referred to as the Venice of the North.

Leige

Liege is the fourth largest city in Belgium and is famous for it's waffles and festivals.

Ghent

Ghent is the third largest city in Belgium and is famous for it's castle surrounded by a moat and St. Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent is home to the famous Ghent Alterpiece.

Waterloo

This is the smallest of the highlighted cities but it is special because the Battle of Waterloo (which ended the Napoleanic Wars) was fought here and I also lived here for 4 years!

Beer

There are over 200 breweries in Belgium offering 3000+ different beers. Hoegaarden, Leffe, and Chimay are a few. Most beers in Belgium are served in their own special glass. For more information on the different beers you can find in Belgium, please click here.

Chocolate!

Famous chocolateers in Beglium include Godiva, Neuhaus, Leonidas.

Waffles

There two varieties of waffles in Belgium, the Liege waffle and the Brussels waffle and they are different than what Americans call Belgian Waffles. The Liege waffle is small with rounded edges and made with a special pearlized sugar. Brussels waffles are large and rectanular shape and made with icing sugar.

Fries

Fries, also known as frites, are actually thought to have orgininated in Belgium not France. In Belgium, it's very popular to eat fries wth mayonnaise rather than ketchup.

Mussels

Mussels (moules) are very tasty and plentiful in Belgium. Moules season is September through February and can be found in most restaurants during that time.
